Pictured below is WMD's Titanium Sapphire Laser. This laser assembly has been ruggedized for use in aircraft. To accomplish this, the frame was machined from a single, solid piece of aluminum. This provides for maximum stability over time by eliminating frame connection interfaces.
Challenges:
Cutting large blocks of aluminum down to <10% of their starting weight requires some planning. To accomplish this, WMD's machinists had to develop custom fixturing and machining techniques to ensure the tolerances required were achieved.
